Sports and Inclusion: two teams and upgraded gyms at San Vittore prison for the reintegration and well-being of inmates

“The practice of sports within penitentiary institutions plays a significant role aimed at promoting the enhancement of corporeality and the abatement of tensions induced by imprisonment, while fostering forms of social aggregation and positive relational models of support for a future path of reintegration.”

- Ministry of Justice

2 teams inside the San Vittore prison in Milan. A male team, composed of the young adults, between 18 and 26, and a female team. Professional technical staff, training materials and a dedicated support figure. Weekly trainings are held, which are not only a time of recreation but above all a time for socializing among the boys and improving their psycho-physical condition. San Vittore

The need for action is therefore clear, all the more so in an environment such as that of San Vittore, which in 2022 records 190. 1 percent overcrowding and 44 suicides committed in the first 9 months of the year in Italian penitentiary institutions.

The objectives of the project

To contribute to the improvement of the psycho-physical conditions of women and men inmates in the Milan San Vittore Prison

  • Strengthen the awareness, self-esteem and health conditions of the participating inmates;
  • Foster the construction of a group identity through sports practice;
  • Promote opportunities for the prison environment to open up to the outside world, offering inmates a prospect of a future after their sentence.

The team

YouSport proposes the organization of weekly workouts that become a time for recreation but above all for socializing among the boys and improving their psycho-physical condition.

Following the group will be our professional coaches and athletic trainers in addition to coordination by our staff.

In addition to the technical part, the Project will be monitored by a sports psychologist.

Sports activity

Weekly activities will target the young adult group and the women's ward.

Within the project, also the redevelopment of seven fitness spaces within the prison house, in which to develop coordinated activities with an athletic trainer.

In addition to the goals of improving the psycho-physical condition of the boys/girls, one of the possible medium- to long-term goals is to involve some of the boys in our first YouSport team playing in the CSI Open A league, and some of the girls in our women's teams.

This of course in primis depending on the specific conditions and possibilities to fit in a competitive team context.

The Center offers its expertise to public and private entities and services, Third Sector entities, for-profit organizations, foundations and institutions of various kinds.

TESTIMONIALS
Instead of students, however, here are women of all ages and nationalities, speaking different languages, but who spend an hour playing soccer together and laughing just like little girls.

Sofia Ceriani, assistant

It was also a good experience that day where there was no shortage of competitiveness, the healthy kind, with appreciation
at the end of the small tournament of those kids (the ones coached by our project) for a few hours of normality.

Elena, manager

Guys!!! In short today's comment is well beyond all expectations and fears. But it was essential to reassure them
that after the course we would come down to play!

Sandro, coach

As soon as they show up they look nice and charged up, although actually from the way they perform the warm-up exercises
(listening very little to Sandro's instructions) you can see that they are interested in the final part of the training, the game.
As they play you can see determination, grit, sometimes far too much competitiveness, but from the smiles and jeers at the end of the game
it is obvious that they had fun, the most important thing.
